Rug Care Made Simple

A little care goes a long way. Follow these simple tips to keep your rug looking its best for years to come.

Spills & Stains

Act quickly. Blot – never rub.

  • Remove solid food carefully.
  • Blot liquids immediately with a clean white absorbent cloth or plain white paper towel.
  • On wool and polypropylene rugs, use a small amount of clean water if needed.
  • Test cleaning products on an inconspicuous area first.
  • Do not rub, scrub or soak the rug.
  • Do not apply water to silk, viscose or other delicate fibres without specialist advice.

Vacuuming

For most rugs, gentle suction is best. Avoid aggressive vacuuming, rotating brushes and beater bars, particularly on wool and delicate rugs. Vacuum in the direction of the pile.

Shedding

Some shedding from a new wool rug is completely normal and should gradually reduce. If an individual tuft sits above the surface, carefully trim it level with scissors – never pull it out.

Loose Tufts / Sprouting

Trim it. Never pull it.

Occasionally individual yarns may rise above the surface. Carefully trim the yarn level with the surrounding pile. Sprouting does not affect the life or durability of your rug.

Pile Reversal / Shading

Pile reversal is a natural characteristic of pile rugs and is not a fault. It happens when the pile changes direction and reflects light differently.

Most rugs affected by pile reversal can be steamed to help the pile return to the correct direction. Bring your rug to Bodelwyddan or Shrewsbury and we’ll do this FREE OF CHARGE.

Colour Variation / Abrash

Small colour variations are common in many traditional and hand-knotted rugs. Abrash is often part of the character and individuality of a handmade rug.

Protect Your Rug

  • Rotate it periodically.
  • Protect it from prolonged strong sunlight.
  • Keep it dry.
  • Use the correct underlay.

Which Underlay Do I Need?

Smooth Floors – Super Grip Anti-Slip Underlay

For wood, laminate, vinyl, smooth tiles and other smooth hard flooring.

Carpet or Uneven Floors – Foxi “Super Plus” Anti-Creep Underlay

For fitted carpet, quarry tiles, uneven tiled floors and other textured or uneven surfaces.

SMOOTH FLOOR = SUPER GRIP | CARPET OR UNEVEN FLOOR = FOXI “SUPER PLUS”

Outdoor Rugs

Remove dirt regularly, avoid prolonged wetness, allow the rug to dry thoroughly and store somewhere dry during prolonged bad weather.

Storing Your Rug

Roll it the right way – never fold it.

Make sure the rug is completely clean and dry. When rolling a FrithRugs rug, make sure our label on the back is visible on the outside once the rug is rolled. Our labels are positioned so this indicates the rug has been rolled in the correct direction of the pile.

Rolling the wrong way can put unnecessary pressure on the pile and potentially cause damage or reverse pile.

Professional Rug Cleaning & Repairs

FrithRugs can arrange professional rug cleaning and repairs, including stain and dirt removal, fringe repairs, edge and binding repairs, damaged areas and specialist care for handmade and Oriental rugs.
